Erik Shirai is a Japanese-American raised in the US.
He is a self-taught visual artist and award-winning filmmaker based in New York City and Tokyo.
He won 'Special Jury prize for Best Documentary Director' at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival for his feature film The Birth of Saké.
The film also won Best Documentary Film at the 2016 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
The film was acquired by Netflix in 2015 and is currently streaming on Amazon and iTunes.
Erik recently co-directed a short film entitled: 'nowhere to go but everywhere' - 行き止まりの向こう側- which premiered at the prestigious International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) and played in competition at the San Sebastian Film Festival in 2022.
Erik is currently working on a feature fiction film entitled 'Umi' set to begin production in the Tohoku region in 2023.
Erik also specializes in high-speed food/drink and table top commercials.

独学でビジュアル・アートを学んだ彼は、現在、フィルムメイカーとしてNYと東京をベースに精力的に活動をしている。
すでに多くの受賞歴があり、
特筆すべきは、長編映画『The Birth of Sake』が2015年トライベッカ映画祭にて【最優秀ドキュメンタリー監督の特別審査員賞】
さらに2016 パームスプリングス国際映画祭にて【最優秀ドキュメンタリー映画賞】を受賞したことだろう。
同作品は、2015年にNetflixが配信権を獲得し、現在ではAmazon と iTunesでもストリーミングされている。
また、短編映画『nowhere to go but everywhere-行き止まりの向こう側-』を共同監督。
この作品は権威あるロッテルダム国際映画祭 (IFFR) でプレミア上映され、
2022 年のサンセバスチャン映画祭でコンペティションにも出品された。

エリックは現在、2023年に東北地方で制作を開始する予定の『海』という長編映画に取り掛かっている。

一方エリックは、テーブルトップ（シズル）のスペシャリストとしても知られており、
ハイスピードを多用した迫力のあるリキッドシーン（飲料など）や、匂いや味まで伝わってきそうなフードシーンの演出・撮影も行う。
